Protect the Ballot Initiative

The Missouri State Legislature is attempting to gut the ballot initiative process - but together, we’re fighting back.

Missouri’s ballot initiative process is one of the best ways for citizens to participate in direct democracy and take action when their elected officials won’t. But right now, the Legislature is attempting a power grab and attempting to pass bills that would make the ballot initiative process more expensive, more difficult, and nearly unusable for citizens.

Here’s what we know:

  • A new poll by President Trump’s pollster found over 80% of Missouri voters don't want the legislature to interfere with our freedom of ballot initiative. (Ragnar Research)

  • Voters value the freedom to vote directly on issues and see it as a more effective avenue to change than voting for candidates. Voters are comfortable with the process as it is and oppose changes that would make it more difficult to exercise this freedom.

  • The Ballot Initiative Process is already difficult and expensive. Only 1% of initiatives that are approved for circulation make it onto the ballot.

We’re fighting back and organizing across the state to protect the ballot initiative process. We launched a campaign to organize voters in all 34 senate districts across the state to demand that our legislators stop the attacks on the process.

To kick off this campaign, we hosted our Protect the Ballot Initiative Rally & Advocacy Day in Jefferson City in April 2021, where over 120 people from nearly every senate district in Missouri joined us to take action, meet with their legislators, and demand the protection of the process. Now, we’re organizing community meetings in every senate district, and are preparing to stop any and all attacks that the Legislature may throw our way. Watch our rally here:
